Purple Flag Places -
STOCKTON HEATH - WARRINGTON

Stockton Heath has a long and varied history dating back to Anglo-Saxon times. The 'Heath' provided a valuable resting place for marching Roman Armies, and was also a camp for both sides during the Civil War. The area became a valuable trading route which has helped to shape the village. Although the village has undergone a significant period of change, its value to the local area is recognised through its conservation status.

Stockton Heath is a vibrant, village in the south of Warrington. The village centre is within easy travelling distance of Warrington town centre. Stockton Heath is a traditional village centre with a modern twist. It has around 35 food and beverage venues in an area no larger than 0.55 square kilometres catering for up to 1,800 visitors on a busy night. The village has a strong sense of place with many community events, cumulating in the annual festival and walking day. Stockton Heath provides a strong night time economy and a refreshing alternative to other larger centres.

The Assessors and Accreditation Panel commended Stockton Heath on numerous points:

  • Stockton Heath is the first area of its type to be awarded Purple Flag status.
  • The strength of resident support and their considerable involvement in the Purple Flag entry was commendable.
  • The working relationship between the local authority, the police and the local pub watch scheme is excellent.
  • The efforts of Council members and Police Officers, especially the Police Commander, are exemplary.

"We wanted to broaden the appeal of the area to families and to celebrate what Stockton Heath Village has to offer its residents and visitors alike. Purple Flag is the first step in helping us to do this. It’s been a real team effort involving the local and parish council, local councillors, residents representatives, local youth parliament member, the licensing trade, police, fire service and neighbourhood board. We recognise that there is always more that can be done to make further improvements but the village is right to be proud of this fantastic achievement."
