Purple Flag Places -
PRESTON
Preston, England's Newest City, is located in the heart of Central Lancashire and is the biggest city in the county. As such its nightlife attracts not only loyal Prestonians but also people from across the county.
A forward thinking city with traditional values, Preston catersf or a broad range of tastes and to its culturally diverse population.
A walk through Preston city centre will take you through the predominantly student quarter with its live music venues, art house cinema, student pubs and traditional ale houses; through the historic Flag Market and past the theatres; up to the city's Church Street area – party central for revellers and home to a wide range of pubs, bars and the Frog & Bucket comedy club; along Fishergate and to the independent cocktail & wine bars and nightclubs. Add to this the considerable and varied choice for dining (rated excellent by the Purple Flag assessors) right across the city centre and you have in front of you a great night out for all ages.
Preston’s central location is well serviced by public transport and its compact, well defined nature with its well signed streets makes it ideal to get around on foot. The wellbeing of Preston’s night time patrons is of high importance and is maintained by excellent CCTV, a strong but friendly police presence, taxi marshalling, efficient door supervision and a number of public health initiatives.
The Assessors and Panel were impressed by particular
strengths including:
-
The partnership work between Preston City Centre BID,
Preston City Council, Lancashire Constabulary and
licensees in the city centre. -
The police’s innovative 'Defender' operation.
-
Signage and information points in the city centre.
-
The lighting of the historic Harris Museum and Library
which adds to the ambiance of the city centre
