NOTTINGHAM

Nottingham regards itself as the premier capital city of the East Midlands! And as one of the UK’s Core Cities, it is identified as a powerhouse of the UK economy.  The city has a strong reputation for its science technology but also its retail offer, and is placed within the top 10 UK retail destinations. There is an overwhelming choice of restaurants, bars, pubs and entertainment venues in the city centre, offering a range of cuisines and experiences.

This cosmopolitan mixed use base that forms the city centre is also host to numerous events throughout the year. Since the re-development of the Old Market Square – opened in 2007 – the city centre has witnessed a rolling programme of public realm improvements including the creation of two new public squares located within the Lace Market and Royal entertainment zones. The totality of these improvements to the public realm have enabled the City to develop and showcase many new major city centre based events, including Light Night, Christmas and Summer seasonal festivals.

The city is proud of its cultural diversity and celebrates its rich diversity through numerous events and a growing cultural offer. Nottingham has worked exceptionally hard to maintain the recent decades of active regeneration.

The city centre would not be complete without its well connected public transport infrastructure and car parking facilities. The railway, tram and bus networks provide excellent services to support the bustling evening and night time economies.

The Assessors and Panel were impressed by particular strengths, including:

  • The customer service and security of Doorwatch & Street Pastors
  • Well-lit and designed way-finding system
  • Refurbishment of the public realm to very high standards
  • Excellent management of the city centre through it business improvement district
  • Excellent partnership work between businesses and agencies
