Purple Flag Places -
HIGH WYCOMBE

High Wycombe has over the last few years seen the development of the Eden Shopping Centre, which has brought High Wycombe into the top 50 shopping destinations in the Country. In 2007 Bucks New University obtained University Status and during term time there are 7000 students in the town.

The population of High Wycombe is approximately 77,178 with the first document existence of a settlement recorded in 970, which appears in the Doomsday Book and was noted for having six mills.

The town has been mainly known for its furniture making and there are still factories in the town, one being the notable Stuart Linford hand made furniture factory in Kitchener Road.  The town received its first Charter from Henry III in 1207 and is the only town to still carry on the tradition of weighing the Mayor and the Charter Trustess in and out of office each year, in public.

The town is steeped in history and many historic buildings still survive. By day the town is a market town and the night-time economy has a good mix of pubs, clubs and restaurants as well as a great Theatre, Cinema, Bowling Alley and many other activities taking place in its historic buildings and Churches.

The Assessors and Panel were impressed by specific actions, including:

  • The partnership, policy development and regulatory aspects, particularly the working relationships with town watch.  High-level commitment to the Purple Flag Award was also commended.
  • The commitment to customer care in the area and the active engagement with the community.
  • The commitment to maintaining the attractiveness of the town centre in the face of financial challenges and vacant business premises.

"We are all really proud of High Wycombe and the way local people and organisations are working together to make it a thriving and safe place to be. We know how long it takes to change perceptions, especially wrong ones, and we see the Purple Flag Award has a great way to send out the message that High Wycombe is a safe place to spend time - day and night"

Councillor Lesley Clarke, Chairman of the Wycombe Partnership
