DERRY - LONDONDERRY

Derry - Londonderry are winners of the first UK City of Culture in 2013. The city is the only remaining completely walled city in the British Isles and its perfectly preserved walls are one of the finest examples of their kind in Europe. The first UK City of Culture 2013 is undoubtedly the city to visit in the North West peninsula with a vast array of Arts and Culture to experience. It may be steeped in centuries of history but it's also in the midst of a transformation like no other, and is very much looking to the future. Derry - Londonderry has a unique identity and a new story to tell.

Evening falls and the beat picks up. Musicians are making their way to Peadar O'Donnell's to kick off the traditional session. Overlooking the floodlit fountains at Guildhall Square, cosmopolitan Café Del Mondo is serving up livewire comedy and lyrical poetry with delicious ethnic food. Around the corner Sandino’s Café Bar is bouncing to a Gypsy folk night. Just a taste of a typical night in Derry. With some of Europe’s finest fish, seafood and meat sourced on its doorstep, it's no surprise the city's eateries are famed for flavour. But Derry people love to eat out and that has helped create a restaurant scene that is as varied as it is eclectic.

In such an accessible city, it’s so easy to get to wherever you fancy, on both sides of the Foyle, and still find yourself in walking distance of your next night time venue or accommodation. The North West will promise to deliver with enthusiasm, creativity, heart and soul to rival any other destination.

The Assessors and Panel had the following positive comments to make:

  • Londonderry's offer, in the context of pubs & bars and late night venues, is excellent. Premise management and the approach, by licensees, to delivering a safe and enjoyable evening is first class.
  • Londonderry's drive to achieve excellence and develop a vibrant, diverse city, whilst acknowledging its shared history, is to be commended.
  • Londonderry's partnership working, leadership and co-ordination/integration of policies and strategies were excellent and extremely professional.
