BOURNEMOUTH
Although Bournemouth is well renowned for the seven mile stretch of sand that frequently features on many promotions, the town has seen a strong development as a diverse and exciting destination for business and leisure, fun and entertainment, education and exhibitions, and not least for the tremendous variety in the night time economy. From the laying of the first stone to the present day has taken just 200 years, a young town maturing quickly and learning fast, Bournemouth has moved energetically to the status of a premier resort in the UK with international recognition.
In addition to high quality entertainment offered through the theatres and the conference halls, Bournemouth has established the town as a major centre on the south coast for open air events and festivals provided not only for the visitors and tourists but also for residents in the wide conurbation. The Air Festival in its fourth year is now a leading event in the south, not only for spectacular air displays across the bay but also for the significant family appeal and of course the night programme that runs for all three days.
The night-time attractions mix many different styles through the bars, clubs, pubs and restaurants with the old adage ‘something for everyone’ never being more appropriate. The introduction of Bournemouth’s first Light Night this year was an indication of the direction that the town is pursuing, and the recent opening of Pavilion Dance by HRH Prince Edward, an exciting and innovative project to expand the culture of dance throughout the South West.
The Assessors and Panel were impressed by specific actions, including:
- The well managed public spaces, including the central gardens.
- The proactive management of the night-time economy involving a night-time economy manager, the local Council, Police and TownWatch.
- The policy co-ordination and partnership working to introduce taxi marshals and Safe Bus schemes.
“Public safety has always been high on the agenda for the Council and we are proud that the joint efforts of our professionals working hard with all our partners have been recognised by this top award.”
Councillor Peter Charon, Leader of the Council.
