AYLESBURY

Aylesbury is the County Town of Buckinghamshire, located just north of the Chiltern Hills in the rich agricultural landscape known as the Vale of Aylesbury. Aylesbury offers a welcominga and accessible shopping scene, traditional street markets, and a rich cultural and political history.

The first market took place in the 13th Century and the marketplace, although now reduced in size, remains the focal point of the town to this day. During the Middle Ages Aylesbury also had two fairs each year, which were important events attracting people from all over Buckinghamshire to buy and sell their wares. Aylesbury became famous for developing a special breed of duck in the 18th and 19th Centuries. It was considered the tastiest duck in the country and its reputation survived, along with its place on the menu within the town.

Aylesbury in 2011 offers a great social experience, from award winning restaurants showcasing local produce, through to familiar high street eateries and a few hidden gems. The Waterside theatre opened in 2010 and has seen over 140,000 visitors through its doors as of May 2011, bringing in new visitors and showcasing Aylesbury town centre as a destination.

The Accreditation Panel were impressed with the:

  • Strong but friendly police and ambulance presence.
  • Proactive approach to the development of street café areas.
  • Comprehensive licensing policy, including an effective saturation policy, which has helped to guide the development and positioning of licensed premises in the Town.
  • Good partnership working between police, Shop watch, Pub watch, businesses and the council; and
  • The clear investment in premises, despite national economic conditions.
